The Old Monterey Foundation invites you to join us for the annual Picnic in the Park at Lower Presidio Historic Park on Saturday, June 22, 11am-3pm. This free event includes great food, live entertainment, historic reenactments, walking tours, costume contests, scavenger hunt, prizes, and much more. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the day!
Enjoy delicious food for your picnic -- from hamburgers and hot dogs to sweet treats -- or bring a picnic or your favorite Lighthouse Avenue takeout, live musical entertainment by The Del Montes and their jangle-twang rock 'n' roll, a performance by a local youth dance troupe, and a reeanactment of the capture of the Presidio of Monterey in 1818 by Argentinian privateer Hippolyte Bouchard and his loyal crew (kids and adults are welcome to dress as pirates and take part in the reenactment). Plus we'll have a costume contest with prizes for best-dressed pirates (kids and adults), a scavenger hunt, and photo ops with pirates and historic reenactors.
There will be free Lower Presidio Historic Park Walking Tours with historian Tim Thomas at 12:30pm, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm today. You can also visit the Presidio of Monterey Museum, operated by the City of Monterey, an excellent place to view exhibits, artifacts, and videos that lead visitors through Monterey's various stages of military development.
Enjoy spectacular views of the beautiful Monterey Bay, Old Fisherman's Wharf, and the Monterey Harbor. See the "before", which is now, and what we envision the "after" to be. Old Monterey Foundation has raised funds to develop trails and interpretive signs for all of the monuments to enhance and restore this park.
